Relief pitcher Tanner Scott has been placed on the injured list because of a sprained left knee. After Saturday night’s game, in which the left-hander did not retire any of the three batters he faced, manager Brandon Hyde said that Scott’s knee was sore.
The Orioles activated left-hander Keegan Akin from the Covid-19 injured list. Right-hander Thomas Eshelman has been designated for assignment to make room for Akin on 40-man roster.
It was the second straight rough outing for the Scott. On Friday night, he didn’t retire any of the four batters he faced, allowing two hits, a walk and a hit batsman. He was charged with three runs. On Saturday night, he walked two and hit a batter. One run scored in the Orioles’ 5-2 win over the Detroit Tigers.
“It’s been going on and off a little bit for the last week to two weeks,” Hyde said of Scott’s knee. “Yesterday, he felt really good, so he was available to pitch, wanted to pitch. Then it was pretty clear in that second hitter, I noticed it. He was landing differently, and unfortunately with the three-batter minimum, I had to keep him in there because he felt fine.
“After the game, the knee was sore. He got evaluated today, and we’re going to put him on the IL.”
Scott is 4-4 with a 3.95 ERA in 48 games. Hyde isn’t sure how he’ll juggle his bullpen without Scott.
“Tanner’s been a weapon for us,” Hyde said. “The last couple of nights weren’t his best, but he’s gotten a lot of big outs for us. I’m just going to continue to try to match up as best as I possibly can without him, and hopefully he’s back soon.”

O's seem to finally be establishing some stability in the starting rotation ... please do not return Akin to the rotation.
It’s official, I’m a Watkins fan. Giving up 3 in the 1st after retiring first two batters would’ve led to a very short start for most pitchers. He turns around and goes 5.2 and only allows one more run. What I LOVE is he pitches inside. His battle with Miggy in the 1st inning was amazing to me in that I don’t remember the last time I saw Miggy looking uncomfortable in the box. The high inside pitch got his attention then Watkins just kept pounding him inside. Miggy worked a walk out of the AB, which is what a Hall of Famer will do, but I’m telling you he was not comfortable that entire AB. I thought he looked like that every AB vs Watkins. That is very impressive.
I have to agree. Watkins looks to be a serviceable back end rotation guy, abs on this staff that’s good enough to be a #3 starter. Each time Means, Harvey, or Watkins takes the mound they are giving the O’s a chance to win.
I’ve got a suggestion for the O’s management… don’t sign anymore pitchers (so called) whose last names begin with the letter A. Akin with an 8.14era, Anderson at 7.67 and before them, Armstrong with 8.55. Nuff said…
I’ve had a problem with the 3 batter minimum since they implemented it “to speed up the game”. Now it appears a players health be damned, suck it up if you’re injured, you’ve got 3 batters to face. How would MLB have looked if there were a grounded to 1st base and Scott had to cover the bag and blew his knee out? MLB had better realize it’s NOT the length of the game that’s turning fans off, it’s the quality of the play. I’ll gladly sit thru a 3 plus hour game if it’s entertaining.
