BALTIMORE-The Orioles announced postponement of Thursday night’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays because rain was forecast to begin about 6 o’clock and last through the night. Although it wasn’t raining at the time, the team made the call at 5:25 for a game scheduled to start at 7:05.
The game will be made up on Saturday, September 11th as part of a doubleheader. The first game will begin at 4:35 p.m.
The Blue Jays have a game at Tampa Bay on Friday night while the Orioles are home for a three-game series against the Chicago White Sox before the All-Star break.
Dillon Tate was scheduled to be the opener on Thursday night with Keegan Akin to follow. Jorge López will start on Friday night against the White Sox.
It’s the fifth postponement this season. The first four were made up the day after the rainout.
Norfolk, Bowie and Delmarva’s scheduled games also were postponed because of the effects of Tropical Storm Elsa.
Lowther optioned, Anderson arrives: The Orioles optioned left-hander Zac Lowther to Triple-A Norfolk and recalled right-hander Shaun Anderson from Norfolk.
Lowther is 0-1 with a 10.80 ERA in five games. He allowed a run on two hits in two innings in Wednesday night’s 10-2 loss to the Blue Jays.
Anderson, who was claimed on waivers from the Texas Rangers on Saturday, will pitch short relief, according to manager Brandon Hyde.
“He hasn’t pitched in a while,” Hyde said. “He’ll be in the bullpen, try and get him some appearances because he hasn’t been on the mound for a while.”
Anderson had a 9.35 ERA in four early-season appearances with Minnesota. He was claimed by Texas on June 18th. Anderson last pitched in a game on June 24th with Triple-A Round Rock.
When he pitches in a game, he’ll become the 47th player used this season by the Orioles.
Means going to Bowie: John Means, who’s on the 10-day injured list because of a left shoulder strain, will get his second rehab start on Friday night in Bowie. Means allowed a run in two innings on Sunday at Aberdeen.
“He’s going to go tomorrow probably, three to four innings, depending how he feels, how long the innings are,” Hyde said.
Means is scheduled to make a start next week for Triple-A Norfolk while the Orioles are on the All-Star break. They’ll resume play on July 16th in Kansas City.
“Then he’s going to join us in Kansas City,” Hyde said. “I’m projecting that his next start with us will probably be early on with the Rays series (July 19-21), probably the fourth or fifth game after the break.”

Well, Watkins was good. Let’s hope he can do it more often. But you’re right about the “lightning in a bottle” comment. I mean, why can’t the O’s be the team for once where someone else’s failed starter comes to and blossoms? Why does it always seem to be the other way around?

Is it even conceivable that every young pitcher that's been brought up has been a bust? What are the chances of that? I guess while we're at it those middle IFers have been at that same consistent level(except a glimmer with Urias). I see where Hays was gonna ride the pine before the rainout. Too bad-- there goes another head-scratching topic out the window. Just gotta get 'ol DJ in there I guess huh?
The ongoing criticisms of Oriole ownership and management that appear in these Comments are well deserved. However, we continue to ignore a meaningful source of the embarrassingly low level of the O's talent pool, one that is out of the control of our home team's executive suite. The other Major League teams are partly responsible for the constant stream of talent-challenged players gracing our roster. If these teams discarded more talented players via waivers and DFA's, then the O's would have access to better pitchers, hitters, and fielders. Unfortunately for us, the other teams will not do this.
