BALTIMORE—The Orioles put third baseman Maikel Franco on the 10-day injured list Wednesday because of a sprained right ankle. The move is retroactive to Sunday, and Franco will be eligible to play after the All-Star break.
Franco injured his ankle trying to catch a pop fly in foul territory for the final out of the Orioles’ 5-2 win over Houston at Minute Maid Park on June 30th. He was in the starting lineup for Tuesday night’s game but was a late scratch.
“We’ve been playing with just the infielders who’ve been on the field, so if something happens to one of these guys we have to get creative,” manager Brandon Hyde said. “He’s just not ready to go yet. The ankle is still bothering him.”
Franco is batting .221 with nine home runs and 42 RBIs in 77 games.
The Orioles called up third baseman Kelvin Gutiérrez from Triple-A Norfolk. Gutierrez was acquired from Kansas City for cash considerations on Saturday.
Gutiérrez hit .215 in 38 games with the Royals this season with a home run and eight RBIs. He played in one game for Norfolk, going hitless in four at-bats.
The Orioles have played Pat Valaika at second, Ramón Urias at short and Domingo Leyba at third during Franco’s absence.
“Leyba’s done a pretty good job over at third base, made some nice plays,” Hyde said. “Ramón and Pat have both been solid. I’m just asking them to make the routine plays and get the balls that they can, and they’ve been doing that for the most part.”
When Gutiérrez appears in a game, he’ll be the 46th player used by the Orioles.

Is this a comedy or an onging nightmare?
Can it be both?...go O’s...
Nightmare on Kramden!
Umpire mega gaffe.
Glad “New York” could straighten it out. (eye roll)
An embarrassing start.
Agree Icty, the umpires are pathetic, good thing they have a great union & no consequences for sucking at their jobs like everyone else...lmao...go O’s...
Matt Harvey experiment needs to end, let another young pitcher come up...go O’s...
Valdez as well...go O’s...
Agree CalPals can we hope it lasts no longer than the return of Means and/or Zimmerman or is that asking too much?
As I’ve stated before and, sadly, will no doubt continue to state often throughout this season, paraphrasing a great man, “and THAT’S the end of the story. Matt Harvey, good day.”
"And now you know the rest of the story!"
Biggio is batting .150 when you subtract his AB vs Orioles. "Matt Harvey, good day!" is high tie Valdez, too, back to selling coffee. Time to bring up that 30 year old who is closing at Norfolk!
Hell, bring in the freshmen JV pitcher from Centennial HS...lol...go O’s...
RISP 2 for 12, the Oriole way!!!
