The Orioles added two players with major league experience to their 40-man roster on Saturday. They acquired infielder Kelvin Gutierrez from the Kansas City Royals for cash considerations and claimed right-handed pitcher Shaun Anderson on waivers from the Texas Rangers.
Gutierrez and Anderson have been assigned to Triple-A Norfolk. The Orioles transferred right-handed pitcher Travis Lakins from the 10-day to the 60-day injured list to make room for Gutierrez on the 40-man roster.
Before Friday night’s game, manager Brandon Hyde said that Lakins had a significant elbow injury, which cast doubt on whether he would return this season.
The Orioles designated right-handed pitcher Konner Wade for assignment to make space for Anderson. Wade allowed six runs on seven hits in 1 1/3 innings in his only appearance with the Orioles.
Gutierrez, a 26-year-old third baseman, has a .226 average with two home runs and 19 RBIs in 62 games for the Royals in the last three seasons,
Gutierrez hit .215 with a homer and eight RBIs in 28 games for Kansas City this season.
Anderson is 3-5 with a 5.48 ERA in 50 games, 16 starts, in the past three seasons with San Francisco and Minnesota. He began this season with the Twins and had a 9.15 ERA in four games.
The 26-year-old, who was a third-round pick by Boston in 2016, was claimed on waivers by Texas on June 18th. He pitched two scoreless innings for Triple-A Round Rock before being designated for assignment.

BRR, You neglected to mention the addition of Shaun Anderson, yet another player with a long resume of subpar performances and a long list of former minor league teams. Acquiring yet another serial under-performer is probably not an indication of insanity. I doubt that management is so delusional as to expect sudden bursts of baseball excellence from its growing collection of castoffs from the Island of Broken Toys. It's mainly an ongoing desperation for replacement parts. Oriole fans who want a winning team will just have to wait until 2024.

Era about 5.00, averaging less than 5 innings per start- not much different than we are getting with our staff and he pitches with better D behind him.
He posted 7 wins over 3 seasons with the O’s. While I realize much of that was due to injuries and bad luck, he’s got 5 wins already this year.
I get sick of watching pitchers leave here and find notable success elsewhere. It’s a pattern.
It’s more a function of playing for a better team than his individual performance
He's not exactly an ace, but regardless, he'd be our 2nd best but most reliable starter if still on the team.

Are YOU paying him? Who cares what he's being paid? I disagree about him playing 2nd fiddle to Zim ...and besides...where is John Means tonite? Hell, the argument could be made that he'd be our number 1!

Agree, Means IL trip seems to be much longer than 10 days, hard to put someone behind someone who isn’t playing, he went 7.2 innings last night, we need 3-4 guys to go that long...go O’s..
My main point is that if you look at his performance to date this season, he is the same pitcher he was for the Os. His record is better because he is playing for a better team.
Obviously, playing for a team with better defense behind you and ability to score more runs increases the chance for any pitchers success.
But beyond that, I wonder what else is different (better?)
about other teams.
Less tangible things like conditioning programs, coaching staff, training facilities, execution of fundamentals, pitching philosophy, managerial decisions, et al.
All valid points and at least some of those apply to the Os
I’m not a gambling man but if I were I’d have put money on Cobb tonite. Somehow you just knew he was gonna be the Cobb that pitched for the Rays and not the Cobb that pitched for the O’s when he took the mound tonite. I haven’t heard any updates on Means lately. Anyone know if he’s still on schedule to come back after All Star break?

Why would the Orioles pay Alex Cobb $5M a year? What does it mean, to be in a rebuild? Rebuild? It means it would be STUPID to try to replace every player we get to hold us over with an expensive best guy available.
Stevie Wilkerson has much value. If Baltimore ever gets back to World Series form, Wilkerson likely will not be part of it as a player, but during this rebuild process, is a great guy to have available.
