BALTIMORE—The good feelings from John Means’ no-hitter on Wednesday didn’t last long for the Orioles on a rainy Friday night.
After starter Matt Harvey retired the Boston Red Sox in order in the top of the first, the Orioles had a chance to give him a lead in the bottom of the inning. Cedric Mullins walked, Austin Hays blooped a single to center, and Trey Mancini hit a line drive to right. However, Mancini’s shot was caught by rightfielder Hunter Renfroe, and Mullins, who misread the play and took off for third, was doubled up at second. End of rally.
Then, with one out out in the top of the second, Boston’s Rafael Devers got jammed and dumped a double into left field. It would be that kind of night for Harvey and the Orioles.
Harvey grappled through three innings and allowed four unearned runs in the fourth as the Orioles lost to Red Sox, 6-2, before 7,724 at Oriole Park.
The Orioles (15-17) failed in their seventh attempt to get to the .500 mark.
Harvey (3-2) allowed two hits and hit a batter in the first three innings. In the fourth, Devers grounded to first baseman Pat Valaika, who threw to Harvey, covering first. Harvey couldn’t handle the throw and was charged with an error. Devers stole third and scored on Renfroe’s single.
Bobby Dalbec, who singled in the third, snapping an 0-for-27 slide, hit a three-run home run to left for a 4-0 lead.
“We’d been playing really clean baseball,” Hyde said. “We played well on the road trip [in Oakland and Seattle]. Tonight wasn’t our best night on the bases or defensively, and it hurt us. It cost us.
“We didn’t exactly help him out defensively,” Hyde said of Harvey. “We need to start playing better defense behind Matt because Matt’s doing a nice job. We just didn’t play a really clean baseball game. We didn’t score many runs for him, and we didn’t play our best defense.”
Harvey left after four innings, his shortest start of the season. Because of the four unearned runs, his ERA dropped from 4.06 to 3.60.
“I just really didn’t have it tonight,” Harvey said. “I was just all over the place, really. Physically, I didn’t feel that great, and I wasn’t able to get it done.
“I didn’t feel good mechanically. I didn’t feel good physically. I didn’t feel that I was strong out there. It was a rough day. Chalk it up, move on and get ready for my next one.”
Harvey’s next start is likely to come Wednesday when the Orioles face his old team, the New York Mets at Citi Field.
Former Oriole Eduardo Rodriguez (5-0) gave up one run on seven hits in five innings for Boston (20-13).
Mullins doubled with one out in the fifth. Hays walked, and Mancini’s base hit scored Mullins.
Ryan Mountcastle led off the bottom of the sixth against Hirokazu Sawamurawith with his second home run, his first since the Orioles’ home opener on April 8th.
Mountcastle and Hays had their first three-hit games of the season. Hays singled with one out in the bottom of the seventh against Garrett Whitlock, and Mancini hit into a double play to end the inning.
Christian Vazquez’s RBI double scored Devers in the eighth against Dillon Tate, and the Orioles were down, 5-2.
Mountcastle and Freddy Galvis singled with two outs in the eighth, but DJ Stewart popped to short for the third out.
The Orioles were 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left 10 on base. They’re 4-11 at home.
“We had a lot of baserunners,” Hyde said. “We didn’t get the big hit.”
Isaac Mattson made his major league debut in the ninth, allowing a run on Marwin Gonzalez’s RBI double. He was sent to Triple-A Norfolk after the game to make room for Zac Lowther, who will be recalled to make Saturday’s start against Boston’s Garrett Richards.
Notes: A ceremony to honor Means for his no-hitter will be held before Saturday night’s game. It was supposed to be held before Friday night’s game but was postponed because of the inclement weather. … The game began after a delay of one hour, 38 minutes. It was the Orioles’ first rain delay. Don't wanna really have to take the shine off of Means' accomplishment but is MLB so bad that we're gonna have a no-hitter every night? As far as Severino batting cleanup--who else? Franco probably,Mountcastle eventually. As far as Severino/Sisco/Ruiz being still on the roster--they're stop- gaps,be patient. Have we noticed a Red Sox trend these last 10 years or so?--last to first,etc. Good chance the get the 3rd overall draft pick AND go to the WS the Very same year. Very clever huh? I guess that's " having your cake and eating it too".

The orioles had a opportunity to tie the game and Stewart did nothing. Stewart has done nothing. He has had opportunity after opportunity. I think when Santander comes back he’s the odd man out. Hays is going to hit if they continue to bat him behind Mullins. The Red Sox pitched to him instead of Mullins. I noticed with mountcastle he appears to be open a tad allowing him to be able to turn on inside fastballs. I didn’t think Harvey pitched that bad. Obviously the error screwed him.
Stewart is erratic and especially with Diaz hopefully here soon he’s definitely the odd man out.
I think Stewart is a bona-fide major league hitter. Certainly not a star, but he can hit. I'm with you, I'd like to see Diaz sooner than later, but barring injuries, I don't think we'll be seeing Diaz until much later in the year. But frankly, I don't think Stewart needs to be jettisoned to make room for Diaz. Get rid of an infielder. Urias or Ruiz ... take your pick.

If my old man spreadsheet is correct .. his ERA during his time in Bal'more was 5.75. The rest of his career the ERA is 4.08. Not bad by in these days.
Mere coincidence? Or short fences? I still believe it was a bad idea letting him go. And I yes, I realize that was Danny Duq's doings, not the boy genius. Mr. Wiley gets my respect for whatever that's worth.

Apparently the fences are only short when we’re on the mound. The hitters never seem to take advantage of what a “hitters paradise” they play in. Or maybe somebody moves the fences out when we’re up to bat.
I was simply stating the Wiley had a wide disparity in ERAs when he didn't pitch half his games in Camden. To the tune almost 2 runs per game.
And yes ... our current group certainly doesn't bang 'em out like Dan Duquette's teams did.
Can anybody tell me why Valaika was playing 1st base last night? Is it to give the scuffling Stewart a break? And if that's the case, why did Stewart pinch hit in crunch time? Barring injury, and considering the makeup of this team, nobody besides Trey or Mountcastle should play 1st base.
And why is Urias starting at 2nd base and not Ruiz? Hell, why is Urias still on the team? And if Ruiz is now relegated to the bench, why is HE still on the team? I kind of understood the experiment playing Ruiz at 2nd. I'm certainly no fan of his, but if he could give us 25+ taters from that position, and I believe he could, then I believe he as some value! But if he can't ward off the likes of Ramon Urias ...well, it's time to bring up some players that can. And there HAS to be somebody down in Norfolk that could.
I can see Galvis playing out the year, but 2nd and 3rd base need to be reconsidered immediately. This team could surprise a few people, but not with the likes of Urias playing 2nd and Pat Valaika manning 1st. C'mon Mr. Elias....let's make some noise. Pretty Please? And as for you Mr. Hyde ... That lineup last night was a joke.

Stewart is struggling against lefties so far this season with 0.414 OPS. So Mountcastle in LF.
Mancini is rated one of the worst defensive 1B by Fangraphs so far this season. So Valaika with over 180 innings at the position at 1B. Who was the error charged to yesterday? Don’t think it was Valaika...
Urias or Ruiz at 2B. Sisco isn’t hitting lefties, so slumping Severino at C.

Valaika may not have been charged with an error, but anybody that saw the play knows that V's overhand throw to the pitcher covering 1st was way too stiff and low putting the pitcher in an awkward position to make play. (you do watch every now and again don't you?

Matt was "Mauer with power" and dominated the minor leagues. Adley has done ZERO so far. I agree that we should "enter real life".
I will be impressed when Adley performs better than Weiters in the majors. He was not the star people predicted but he was a solid player for a # of years.

Having said Adley has done zero so far in what a few minor league games so far this year. He looked good this spring and at the alternate site last year and the abbreviated spring training. As for Matt Weiters I say sign him immediately compared to what we have now he would be godsend
The 4th no hitter of the season was pitched last night after only 20% of games played. The most no hitters in a season in modern era is 7. I have posted in the past that complete games are a thing of the past, that Palmers 25 CGs in 1975 is more than you’ll see by all MLB pitchers combined in a season now. I still believe that, yet also more no hitters will be thrown as well. It’s a dichotomy of modern baseball. Today’s hitters simply have one approach, swing for the fences no matter the situation. Sadly, the no hitters seem cheapened now. I’m sure there won’t be 20 no hitters this year, but I’m also sure there won’t be 25 complete games pitched. I’m getting too old for this shi......style of baseball.
I'm not so sure about all your numbers ... but you're spot on regarding the style of play. Home runs have also been cheapened.
No doubt the parks are too small, but I'm double-dog convinced that one alteration would go a looong way in curing baseball ....
Simply call balls and strikes as they are written in the rule book. Call the high strike at the letters, not the waistline.
You mentioned Jim Palmers 25 CGs? Mr. Palmer LIVED in the upper half of the strike zone. Is this a coincidence? Maybe, but make these "swing for the fences behemoths" cover the upper half of the strike zone, and I truly believe things would change for the better.

BRR, dud you happen to catch the video of Torres scoring from 1st in an infield single against Astros the other night? It perfectly captured MLB as it’s played today. Torres on 1st, usual shift in vs LH batter. Ball hit up the middle and both fielders break for it. 2nd baseman bobbles it. No one covering 3rd so Torres rounds 2nd and hero’s going. Catcher heads to 3rd and Torres sees this and sees no one is covering home. It’s a foot race between Torres and a catcher in full gear. Torres scores standing up without so much as even a throw. He scores with the fielder who originally bobbled the ball standing there holding the ball! Where the hell was the pitcher on the pjj km at

As I was saying, where the hell was the pitcher on the play? I guess just admiring it from a distance. The ONLY player with any baseball sense on that play was Torres. If you haven’t seen it yet you must Google it. It was hysterical if nothing else. Little league baseball at the major league level.
