Orioles make trade of Alex Cobb to Angels official

FREE ARTICLE

The Orioles made their trade of right-hander Alex Cobb to the Los Angeles Angels official late Tuesday night. They sent Cobb, who still has a year left on his four-year, $57 million contract, to the Angels for second baseman/outfielder Jahmai Jones.

Much of Cobb’s 2021 salary will be paid by the Orioles.

In his three years with the Orioles, Cobb had a 7-22 record with a 5.10 ERA. He lost 11 decisions at home.

Jones, who is 23, was the Angels’ second-round draft pick in 2015 and made his major league debut in 2020 when he was 3-for-7 (.429) with an RBI.

Shortly before the Cobb announcement, the Orioles made a move to augment their starting rotation by signing left-hander Wade LeBlanc, who was with the team in 2020, to a minor league contract. That news was reported by Jon Morosi of MLB Network and confirmed by an industry source. LeBlanc’s base salary will be $700,000.

  • Good move for the Os! 2B is a wasteland at the moment, but now at least we have a potential option. They need to jettison Davis. It’s hard to imagine two more years on that contract. Elias is targeting ‘22-‘24 I would guess for Os to breakout.

  • Of course they signed LeBlanc. He proved so much last season. Forget about the plus 8 ERA, he was undefeated at 1-0.

  • Just saw that MLB Pipeline ranked Jones as the O’s #19 prospect. So either the O’s really are loading up on talent or the Angels, well, not so much.

  • I’d rather lose some games now and win a lot later. Back in day The Oriole Way was key to our being the 10,000 lb gorilla beating up on the Yanks and Sox. The Oriole Way was fostered by one of the best farm systems in the Majors. Elias is stocking our farm system to play in OPACY and for trade stock. I believe he’s on the right path to long term success.

  • Wade LeBlanc??????????? UNBELIEVABLE! I guess Ubaldo will be coming here in the next day or two. Elais, take another hundred grand out of petty cash as a bonus, you earned it.

  • Love this move! Looks like Jones can be a 2nd baseman of the future. Cobb does take away a veteran but he was not part of the future, his numbers weren’t great, and that unloads alot of money. Bringing back LeBlanc, although he struggled with us, gives us a veteran and hopefully an innings eater. I like both of these moves

  • Not sure why everyone is so fired up about the Jones acquisition, 2MLB games at 2nd base, stats not as good as utility guys we already have, seeing as we’re paying over 1/2 Cobbs salary this yr not sure of the acquisition, except to fill the minors with tradable guys...go O’s...

  • They essentially bought a mediocre to decent prospect. They need to do Things like this more often if they are going to rebuild.i like this move a lot!
