John Means finishes second to Houston’s Yordan Alvarez in AL Rookie of the Year voting

Orioles left-hander John Means finished second to Houston’s Yordan Alvarez in voting for the American League Rookie of the Year.

Alvarez, who homered in his major league debut against the Orioles on June 9, was the unanimous winner of the annual award voted on by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. He also hit three homers and drove in seven runs in the Astros’ 23-2 win over the Orioles on August 10.

For the season, Alvarez batted .313 with 27 home runs and 78 RBIs in 87 games.

Means, who received 16 second-place votes and five for third place was 12-11 with a 3.60 ERA for a team that won just 54 games. He was the Orioles’ representative for July’s All-Star Game.

Tampa Bay infielder Brandon Lowe finished third.

No Orioles player has won Rookie of the Year since Gregg Olson in 1989.
