BOSTON—The Orioles have called up Hunter Harvey, their top draft choice in 2013, from Triple-A Norfolk.
Harvey, whose career has been riddled with injuries, has finally had a season when he’s healthy, and the Orioles decided to promote the right-handed pitcher on Saturday.
After struggling as a starter for Double-A Bowie, Harvey was moved to the bullpen and pitched well for the Baysox. Harvey was promoted to Norfolk, and in 12 relief appearances, he is 1-1 with a 4.32 ERA. He has struck out 22 in 16 2/3 innings, walked five and allowed two home runs. His WHIP is 1.080.
Harvey was the 22nd overall pick in the 2013 draft, and in 2014 threw 87 2/3 innings, his most as a professional, for Low-A Delmarva before he was shut down in late July with a forearm injury.
He missed the 2015 season with injuries, and pitched just 12 2/3 innings in 2016 before undergoing Tommy John surgery in July.
Harvey had nine starts for Bowie in 2018 but suffered a shoulder injury in June when trying to elude a foul ball in the dugout, an injury that ended his season.
Harvey was called up for three games in April 2018 but wasn’t used.
He’ll wear No. 56 and will become the 54th player used by the Orioles this season. They’ve already used 36 pitchers.

Just hope and pray that he's the real deal and doesn't just join the illustrious crew riding the Norfolk Shuttle. This organization needs a real shot in the arm. Fingers crossed.

Yeah, it's a shame that we let Yaz languish in the minors, while giving extended playing time to Mullins, Broxton, Rickard, Wilkerson, etc.

In fairness to Yaz , he was exposed in the Rule 5 draft 3 years in a row and no other team took him. His minor league numbers weren’t that great. The change of scenery did him good. Just as a change of scenery did wonders for Alberto, Nunez, and Severino. Let’s see if all of them can sustain their success or if they are benefiting from the ridiculous ball being used this year

What 28 year old minor league gem w average at best numbers is the next Yastremszki, Cal? This happens to literally every team. Yastrzemski was never a big prospect nor did he ever produce in the minor leagues. Is it sustainable? I doubt it. Some little known guy pops up in another situation and produces for a time. That’s baseball.

Don’t think that bringing up Yaz would have sold tickets. If that were the case the Orioles would bring up Ryan Ripken. The Orioles drafted Yaz , he was given plenty of chances in the minors and never played well enough in their opinion to earn a promotion. 29 other teams passed on him 3 years in a row when he was exposed in the Rule 5 draft. He went to the Giants AAA team, hit well and earned a promotion. Good for him. If he had done that with Norfolk he would have been brought up here. Don’t you think Dan Duquette, fired by the Red Sox, would have loved to have stuck it to the Red Sox by having Yaz make it big with the Orioles? Just never worked out here
