BALTIMORE—The Orioles had hoped to win a series for the first time since late April on Thursday night against the Toronto Blue Jays.
For a while, it appeared possible.
Anthony Santander’s second RBI single of the night tied the score, 2-2, in fifth.
But in the sixth, the Toronto Blue Jays scored seven runs on their way to a 12-3 win over the Orioles.
Instead of a taut game, the Orioles allowed 10 runs or more for the 11th time this season. In games decided by five runs or more, the Orioles are 3-18.
“That was a good game through five,” Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said.
After starter Gabriel Ynoa allowed the first of two home runs to Cavan Biggio to lead off the sixth, he was removed. The normally steady Paul Fry allowed five runs for the first time in his career. Evan Phillips allowed two more.
“Ynoa was throwing the ball pretty well, just left a 3-2 sinker kind of in the middle part of the plate,” Hyde said. “It’s 3-2 and set up for Paul Fry right there, and he had a tough time locating and some walks, and next thing you know it got away from us.”
The seven runs scored were the most the Orioles gave up in an inning this season. They allowed 17 hits, two short of their season high.
Josh Lucas allowed three runs in the seventh, including Biggio’s second home run.
Santander had three hits. Chance Sisco hit his second home run.
Marcus Stroman went six innings for Toronto for the win.
The Orioles still have not won a series since April 22-24. In the 14 series since then, they’ve lost 13—11 in succession—and split one.
Ynoa’s night: Ynoa allowed three runs in five-plus innings. He allowed home runs to Biggio in the second and Lourdes Gurriel in the sixth. He left after Gurriel’s homer.
In between, Toronto scored a run on three singles in the third. Gurriel’s single scored Danny Jansen.
“It’s not what I was expecting,” Ynoa said through a translator. “I tried to go longer, to pitch better. I think I left the game pretty close.”
Cashner to wait: Andrew Cashner, who left his last start on June 8 after six innings because of a blister, has been scratched from Friday’s start.
Hyde won’t decide on a starter until Friday, but didn’t think Cashner would have to go on the 10-day injured list.
“I don’t think so,” Hyde said. “I think it’s just going to be a few days. I don’t think it’s going to be long.
“We were hoping it was going to get better. It just didn’t feel right today so we made a kind of last-second decision today to push him back a few days. We need a starter for tomorrow, which was possibly going to be a bullpen day but the way the game turned out tonight it’s not a possibility.”
Norfolk’s starter for Friday is scheduled to be Luis Ortiz, who’s on the 40-man roster. If Cashner’s not put on the IL, the Orioles will have to make a move to add Ortiz or someone else. Hyde indicated that a move would be necessary.
Davis goes the other way: Chris Davis, who unveiled a new batting stance on Wednesday night by lowering his hands, began the fifth inning with a single that rolled into left field.
“It felt so good,” Davis said. “Obviously I’m making some adjustments and trying to do it on the fly and apply it in-game, which is, as you can tell, quite tough. But, yeah, it felt good to get on base and kind of get a rally started and make Stroman work a little. Obviously, he was tough tonight, but it was nice to be part of the action for once.”
Davis is batting .167 after moving his average to .193 on May 10. He spent 10 days on the IL with inflammation in his left hip.
“Health-wise, I felt pretty good,” Davis said. “I felt like I’m as close to 100 percent as you can be right now. And like I said, I’m trying to make adjustments right now. I understand that I haven’t produced even close to where I’m capable of and at some point you just get tired of going out and doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.
“So we pretty much scraped everything and started back at square one, and that’s where I’m headed now. It’s encouraging every day to have something to look forward to, to work toward that’s different, so I’m trying to keep my focus on that.”

Makes me feel warm & fuzzy inside to hear Davis is feeling close to 100% physically. Now if he could only raise that average by 100 points....
Davis has said before that no one is 100 thru 2 and half months of the season . I really think he smokes dope because he is the most laid back athlete I’ve ever seen who performs so poorly.
Nice to hear Rutschman win all these awards now but let's not be the last team to sign our first rounder. I think Fry has been a little over exposed at this point. Watching bloops constantly falling in front of Wilkerson/Mancini is getting very old. Can't wait for the day of a Hays,Diaz combo in the OF.

Thank god the Raptors game was on, so very tired of all the familiar quotes after a pathetic showing by our birds. I understand the rebuild but why continue with the illusion that things are getting better, are they? Its a horrible thought that Mark and Chris are around for the rest of the season, it only makes the team tougher to watch. I am a long time supporter of Baltimore but this whole scenario of new management and methods of getting to the promised land leaves me wondering.
I do believe Trumbo is going to be a wrench in the process only because he does not fit into the plan and he will have to be put on display in order to move him.That will of course take up space and hinder the audition or process of developing a player for the future.Don't know what can be done with Davis.To say he is going to try something new after all this time,well I guess it is better than nothing.He accidently went the other way last nite so that was not on purpose.Some things are getting old even for a long time dedicated fan like me though I will never jump ship.A lot of it is the organization inherited some problems that cannot be easily solved.
Trumbo is on the 60 day injured list-he is not on the 40 man roster. He’s not coming back anytime soon so he’s not causing any issues with the roster. Due to the severity of his injury he probably had no trade value to begin with.
How does the organization feel about Sisco's athleticism and ability to move to an infield spot Rich? He looks like he might have a little something at the dish, but not much at all behind it. If Rutschman turns out to be half as good as advertised and Chance hits too well to be a backup, that's probably what needs to happen. I know this is all off in the distance, but the Biggio kid got me thinking since his Dad managed to have a halfway decent career converting to 2B from Catcher. I know the conventional wisdom says put him in a corner outfield spot, but with the emphasis on launch angle that's folly, all three of your OF need to be defensive studs. Hiding the lumbering 40 HR guy in Right is a thing of the past, at least it should be. Thoughts?

I have not heard anything about a possible move for Sisco, Bancells, and for now, the Orioles are well-served having a left-handed hitting catcher, too.
I agree with you Bancells. If Adley is as good as they say he will be , Severino would be a perfect back up. We have Mountcastle and Mancini at first once Davis is kicked out so Sisco who can hit should be moved to a infield position if he’s able to learn it
Everyone is trying so hard to make us believe in Chris Davis. An educated fan can see for themselves that he's a long way from being a CONSISTENT, productive member of the team. With each passing day, his chances of rebounding get slimmer.
There will be no rebound. Chris Davis is a dead man walking. I think that's the biggest issue most fans have with this season; it still has 2018 stains all over it. Trumbo, Cobb, Davis all of these guys represent the past. And the bulk of the new guys don't look like factors in the future. Once this team is young and firmly facing toward the future, even if they are bad, a lot of interest will return.
Most of us stuck a fork in Davis 2017. He was done then.
I will believe that the Orioles are serious about rebuilding when they ax Davis and Trumbo. You could replace Davis with someone who is making around the major league minimum and the extra cost shouldn't hurt them. Like Stewart or Santander. If that's too much cost, maybe they need to move.
It's tough for even Pollyanna Butch to come up with some optimism but, I'll try. :-)

I'd love to see Ortiz get a shot. He's not Cy Young material by any means but, he's been pretty consistent.

Ortiz will probably be sent down after the game , unless he throws a perfect game. Even then they probably send him down and activate Dwight Smith Jr so they can have their 4 man bench. Would not be surprised to see Eshelman make his next start in Oakland for the Orioles

Whoever they bring up from Norfolk will just be a “warm body” and to expect anything enlightening is pure folly. As I’ve posted here since last Fall, the cupboard is bare. They’ve been waiting for some of these pitchers to step up for years and we see them come in for a few games and then get replaced by someone of the same level of talent. The only change is the name on the back of the uniform. They could save some money by leaving it off. With the possible exception of Akin there isn’t much there to work with. There was a comment posted above concerning Tom Eshelman... all I can say is don’t hold your breath. Remember, he’s another reclamation project who has never pitched above AAA and that was with little success, especially last year. Just saying...
