NEW YORK—Trey Gibson will make his first major league start against the New York Yankees on Sunday as the 23-year-old continues his rapid ascent through the Orioles’ system.
At this point in 2025, Gibson, an undrafted free agent signee, was pitching for High-A Aberdeen. He also pitched for Double-A Chesapeake and Triple-A Norfolk, concluding the season as the Orioles’ top minor league pitcher.
Gibson is 2-2 with a 4.01 ERA in six starts with Norfolk.
To make room for Gibson on the roster, the Orioles optioned left-hander Nick Raquet to Norfolk. Raquet has a 10.13 ERA in three games.
Maverick Handley, who’s the taxi squad catcher on this road trip with the Orioles, caught him in Norfolk last year and was impressed with the variety of Gibson’s pitches. Handley didn’t have enough buttons on his Pitchcom to account for all of Gibson’s pitches.
“Trey is the ultimate competitor,” Handley said. “He reminds me of the 2022 Grayson Rodriguez, that kind of mentality. ‘I’m going to go out there and shove it.’ He’s got a ton of different spins. He’s got a to of different looks.”
Gibson is the ninth starter, 23rd pitcher and 39th player used by the Orioles this season.
Shortstop Gunnar Henderson is not starting for the first time this season
