Orioles hire Jared Banner as general manager

The Orioles have hired Jared Banner as general manager, the team announced on Monday. Banner had been with the Chicago Cubs since December 2020, most recently as assistant general manager.

According to the Orioles, Banner will work with president of baseball operations Mike Elias, “managing the baseball operations department on a day-to-day basis. Banner will lead the organization’s player development, coaching and performance efforts, while also partnering with Elias on strategy, staffing, and talent acquisition, among other duties.”

Elias was promoted from general manager to his current position after the 2024 season, news that didn’t surface until September 2025, but the general manager position wasn’t filled until now.

The 40-year-old Banner, who’s a native of Brooklyn, began his career with Boston Red Sox after graduating from Amherst in 2007. He was the Red Sox’s vice president player personnel in 2017-2018 and moved on to the New York Mets, whom he grew up rooting for.

He served as executive director of player development with the Mets beginning in December 2018 and joined the Cubs in 2020 as vice president of special projects. He was promoted to vice president of player development in 2022 and named assistant general manager in January 2024.

“When I first heard Mike’s vision, I knew it was something I wanted to be a part of,” Banner said in a statement. “The Orioles are a storied franchise with a passionate fanbase, a historic ballpark, and an organization full of talent. I look forward to building upon the foundation laid by Mike and his team to construct a world-class organization and bring championships back to Baltimore.”

Elias, who has headed baseball operations since November 2018, said: “Jared has been one of the rising talents in our league for some time, now. He has demonstrated success running multiple different departments and has worked alongside some of the best people and front office talent in the league across multiple stops.

“He is a perfect fit to grow, evolve and improve the Orioles’ baseball operations, and I look forward to working with him very closely as we build for 2027 and beyond. We welcome him and his family to Baltimore, and we are very pleased that they chose our team and our community for the next phase of their baseball journey.”

Banner played four years of varsity baseball at Amherst, where he majored in psychology and most recently taught at Northwestern.
