Orioles claim outfielder Luis Robert Jr. off waivers; Povich recalled to start Monday night’s game

DENVER–The Orioles on Monday claimed outfielder Luis Robert Jr. off waivers from the New York Mets.

The Orioles will be responsible for just under $3 million remaining on Robert’s $20 million contract, as well as the $2 million buyout if a $20 million option for 2027 isn’t exercised.

A 29-year-old right-handed hitter, Robert batted .223 with 10 home runs and 23 RBIs with a .702 OPS in 58 games for the Mets. He has an .841 OPS in August and has played 46 games in center field this season. He won the Gold Glove Award among center fielders in 2020.

Robert’s best year came in 2023 when he hit .264 with 38 home runs, 80 RBIs and an .857 OPS for the Chicago White Sox. The Cuban native is finishing a seven-year, $70 million contract, which contains a $20 million option for next season.

Players must join an organization by Monday to be eligible for the playoffs.

Left-hander Cade Povich was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk, and he’ll start tonight’s game, the first of a three-game series with the Colorado Rockies.

The Orioles optioned right-hander Anthony Nunez to Norfolk. He’s 3-2 with a 4.29 ERA and three saves in 44 games.

To make room for Robert, who has not yet reported on the 40-man roster, the Orioles designated infielder Luis Vázquez for assignment.

The Orioles get to add a position player and pitcher on Tuesday when the rosters expand to 28 players.
