Trey Mancini, who announced his retirement from baseball on August 18th will officially retire as an Oriole. Mancini, whose valiant fight against colon cancer inspired fans around the country, will appear at Oriole Park for a ceremony before the team’s 4:05 p.m. game against the Milwaukee Brewers on September 19th.
He’ll sign a one-day contract with the Orioles just a day before the 10th anniversary of his major league debut
Mancini, who was voted Most Valuable Oriole in 2019, was the team’s eighth-round draft pick in 2013 and began his career by hitting three home runs in his first five games in 2016.
In 2017, Mancini finished third in the American League Rookie of the Year voting, and had his best year in 2019 when he hit 35 home runs, drove in 97 runs and hit .291 with an .899 OPS.
After missing the 2020 season following cancer surgery and chemotherapy, Mancini was voted American League Comeback Player of the Year in 2021 when he hit .255 with a .758 OPS, 21 home runs and 71 RBIs.
On July 28th, 2022, his last home game and the anniversary of the death of Mo Gaba, a young cancer patient with whom he’d grown close, Mancini hit an inside-the-park home run.
He was traded to Houston on August 1st. Mancini was a member of the World Series winning Astros team in 2022, and played 79 games with the Chicago Cubs in 2023.
Mancini made a brief comeback with the Los Angeles Angels this year, hitting .308 in five games.
Before the game, Mancini will be joined by former teammates, coaches, medical professionals and others in a pregame ceremony. He’ll throw out the first pitch and sign autographs for children 12 and under.
