Will Orioles extend Trevor Rogers? | MAILBAG

Question: Trevor Rogers has said many times he wants to remain with the Orioles. He is actually a year younger than Kyle Bradish and has been very good the last two seasons. It’s time to extend him. Do you think Mike Elias will? From: Mike Beale

Answer: Mike, I think Trevor Rogers deserves an extension, and I think it’s possible the team will extend him before the end of the season. With the trade deadline just a week away, I think it’s unlikely it will happen between now and then.

There could be a qualifying offer for Rogers, which if he accepts in this uncertain labor market, ensures that he stays with the Orioles for another year. They could then negotiate an extension.

Either way, I hope that Rogers sticks around. He’s a good guy and good pitcher. 

Question:  Joseph Dzierwa is a young lefty super prospect at Double A Chesapeake. Any chance the O’s bring him up (Jim Palmer or Manny Machado like) as a wild-card lefty Swiss Army knife?

He is a very mature, college arm with excellent control. The experience, even in the bullpen, could be invaluable. Plus he could be our best lefty solution. If you’re all in, bring him up. From: Bill Connor

Answer: Bill, I’ve received a similar suggestion from Gene Rene. Under Mike Elias, the Orioles haven’t brought up a single prospect directly from Double-A, and I don’t think they’ll deviate from their modus operandi.

I’ve seen Dzierwa pitch twice, once during Spring Breakout when he struck out eight batters in three innings, and also early this season at Frederick. He’s been very impressive, but the guess here is that the Orioles will look for established major leaguers in the next several days ahead of the deadline rather than rush Dzierwa.
