The Orioles claimed catcher Yohel Pozo off waivers from the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday and optioned him to Triple-A Norfolk.
With their frontline catchers Samuel Basallo and Adley Rutschman on the 10-day injured list, and Sam Huff and Chadwick Tromp sharing the catcher duties, the Orioles needed another catcher with major league experience.
Pozo hit .242 with five RBIs in 18 games this season with the Cardinals. In three seasons with Texas and St. Louis, Pozo is hitting .247 with six home runs and 33 RBIs in 106 games. He’s thrown out 21.3 percent of runners attempting to steal.
The Orioles optioned outfielder Jhonathan Rodriguez to Norfolk after Wednesday night’s second game and have designated him for assignment.
Rodriguez, who was recalled from the Tides when Basallo went to the injured list was 2-for-4 in the second game. In seven games with the Orioles this season, Rodriguez is hitting .182 (2-for-11) with two RBIs.
The Orioles will add a player for Friday night’s game with Atlanta. They currently have 12 pitchers and 13 position players.
Outfielder Rudy Martin Jr., who was acquired last Friday from Kansas City was claimed off waivers by Toronto.
