Orioles place Basallo on injured list; Rutschman unsure about his return from wrist injury; O’s-Red Sox lineups

BOSTON—About 20 minutes before Wednesday’s first game of a doubleheader against the Red Sox, the Orioles placed catcher Samuel Basallo on the 10-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation.  Basallo hasn’t played since leaving Sunday’s game with right shoulder discomfort.

Sam Huff will catch the first game, and it’s likely Chadwick Tromp will catch the second game.

Outfielder Johnathan Rodriguez was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk to replace Basallo on the roster.

Rutschman unsure about return

It’s been a strange year for Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman, who played in the All-Star Game last week and is now on the injured list for the third time this season. His first two injuries were left ankle inflammation in April and a concussion in June.

Rutschman’s injury this time is left wrist inflammation, and though he’s eligible to play again on July 29th, he refused to speculate on his return.

“You’re going to have to ask someone else about that,” Rutschman said. “I don’t exactly know what the exact timeline is for it.”

Rutschman said he hurt the wrist during last Friday’s game at Houston.

“Weird swing,” he said. “During my last [at-bat] of the game, right-handed. It was a weird swing … I think it’s trending in the right direction.”

It’s also been a weird season for Rutschman, with success in between the three injured list stints.

“Ups and downs,” he said. “A lot of good, a lot of random stuff, concussion, ankle, and this. It’s been a fun year, but also it’s frustrating to spend any time not playing.

“You want to play. Even when you’re not feeling great. It’s better to be out on the field playing with your guys.”

In Rutschman’s first three seasons with the Orioles, he didn’t spend any time on the injured list. But since June 2025, he’s had five trips to the injured list. Last year, he had two oblique strains, one on each side.

“The tough part is this last offseason, just trying to find a lot of stuff to avoid like the big [injuries] like the obliques,” Rutschman said. “You’re trying to figure out how to have that soft tissue stuff be a non-factor. When you have a weird random thing like your ankle and now in the small part of your wrist and the concussion, you feel like that stuff is more out of your control. It’s tough.”

Manager Craig Albernaz, a former catcher, spoke about Rutschman’s injuries.

“This game is rugged, and you never know what can happen,” Albernaz said. “The same thing with injuries. Adley has done everything he can to get his body into the best spot … These freak ones, you just can’t avoid it. I know it sucks. He feels it, but ultimately it can be worse. He just has to be diligent with his rehab process and attacking it each day so something like this just doesn’t linger.”

Notes: Albernaz said the Orioles have candidates for a 27th man for the second game. “We have a few options, but keeping our options open. It all depends on Game 1,” he said. It will likely be a bullpen arm… The Red Sox are expected to activate Ranger Suárez from the injured list to serve as the 27th man in Game 2.
