Orioles add Huff as 3rd catcher, option Sanders

The Orioles on Sunday purchased the contract of catcher Sam Huff from Triple-A Norfolk and optioned right-handed pitcher Cam Sanders to Triple-A Norfolk.

Closer Ryan Helsley was transferred to the 60-day injured list. He has right elbow discomfort.

It’s the third time this season Huff has been added to the 40-man roster. He was 4-for-23 (.177) with an RBI in nine games when Adley Rutschman, who’s not in the lineup for Sunday’s game in Houston, was on the injured list.

Rutschman was out in April with a left ankle injury and in June with a concussion. He caught the last three innings of the All-Star Game on Tuesday.

Sanders pitched in the first two games of the series, retiring all five batters he faced and recorded a save on Saturday.

Helsley won’t be eligible to return until late August.
