Orioles reliever Keegan Akin had Tommy John surgery on his left elbow on Wednesday. The surgery was performed by Dr. Keith Meister in Arlington, Texas. The Orioles say the surgery was successful.
The 31-year-old left-hander, who is on the 60-day injured list, last pitched on June 27th, throwing two scoreless innings, allowing one hit against Washington.
In 24 games this season, Akin was 0-1 with a 5.68 ERA. He missed the first month of the season with a left groin injury.
Akin was a second-round pick by the Orioles in 2016 and reached the majors on August 14th, 2020. In seven seasons with the Orioles, Akin, who will become a free agent after this season, is 16-23 with a 4.55 ERA and 11 saves in 255 games. He has started 30 games.
