The Orioles placed their closer, right-hander Ryan Helsley, on the 15-day injured list with right elbow discomfort. The move is retroactive to June 30th.
Manager Craig Albernaz intended to use Helsley in the ninth inning of Wednesday’s game against the Chicago White Sox, but he reported that he felt discomfort when he was warming up.
Helsley, who missed seven weeks with right elbow inflammation, is 0-4 with a 4.11 ERA and eight saves in 17 games. He signed a one-year, $14 million contract with a $14 million player option for 2027.
Albernaz told reporters in Cincinnati that Helsley and left-hander Keegan Akin, who’s on the 15-day injured list with left elbow discomfort are both evaluating their options.
The Orioles recalled utility player Jeremiah Jackson and right-handed reliever Anthony Nunez from Triple-A Norfolk.
Nunez, who was optioned to Norfolk when Helsley returned from the injured list, was 2-2 with a 4.98 ERA and three saves in 32 games with the Orioles. He was 0-1 with a 7.50 ERA in five games with the Tides.
Jackson was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk last Sunday because the team wanted to keep three catchers after Adley Rutschman returned from the concussion injured list. He was hitting .251 with a .664 OPS with seven home runs and 32 RBIs in 66 games.
Jackson played two games for Norfolk, going 2-for-9 (.222) with an RBI.
Catcher Chadwick Tromp was designated for assignment. Tromp was 2-for-3 (.667) with an RBI.
The Orioles have 39 players on their 40-man roster.
Notes: Right-hander Yaramil Hiraldo, who’s rehabbing his right shoulder, had his rehab assignment moved to Norfolk. Catcher Sam Huff, who became a free agent after declining an assignment to Norfolk, has re-signed and is back with the Tides.
