Orioles’ injury update on Basallo, Bassitt, Helsley, Kremer, Povich; Albernaz reviews Sunday’s controversial call; O’s-Mariners lineups

BALTIMORE—Neither Samuel Basallo nor Adley Rutschman are in the Orioles’ lineup for Monday night’s game against the Seattle Mariners. Sam Huff is the starting catcher, but manager Craig Albernaz said Basallo is fine.

Basallo was pinch-hit for in the eighth inning of Sunday’s 6-4 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays.

“He has a bony growth in his wrist,” Albernaz said. “It’s one of those things where it’s going to be uncomfortable. It’s something that he’s always had … With Sammy, it’s knowing his body and playing through some things and knowing that he can play. It’s one of those things where we’re going to have to learn on the fly.

“He’s shown the talent, the impact the skills he can make with us. It’s real. This is another step in his development, knowing how to play through some pain and not being 100 percent all the time.”

Bassitt’s outlook

Starting pitcher Chris Bassitt, who was placed on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to June 5th, because of lower back discomfort, is eligible to come off the IL on June 20th.

The 37-year-old right-hander declined to discuss his condition with reporters, and Albernaz said it was too soon to speculate on a return date.

“He’s looking at his options to see what the best course of action is,” Albernaz said.

The Orioles’ latest injury report said that Bassitt is getting a second opinion on the back.

There are 11 Orioles on the injured list and Bassitt is the 20th different player on the IL.

Sunday’s controversial call

Albernaz said there was a conversation between the Orioles and Major League Baseball about Sunday’s play involving Gunnar Henderson and Toronto’s Ernie Clement.

The Orioles believed that Clement should have been called out at second for running out of the baseline. They thought Henderson made a legitimate attempt at tagging Clement.

“The umpire made the call. I disagree with it,” Albernaz said. “I think we all disagree with it. Great conversations afterwards, and at the end of the day, the call was made and you can’t change the call, you can’t change the result of what happened.

“Can’t change the result of the game. It’s why baseball is the greatest game but also like it’s mental warfare. You just have to move on and get over it and focus on Seattle, and that’s what our guys are doing.

“There’s nothing that our guys could have done differently. The call was made, and that’s that.”

Injury update

Closer Ryan Helsley threw a live batting practice session at Camden Yards on Monday. Helsley is on the 15-day injured list with right elbow inflammation. … Right-handed reliever Yaramil Hiraldo, who’s on the 60-day IL with right shoulder inflammation, began throwing bullpen sessions last week. … Starting pitcher Dean Kremer, who’s on the 60-day IL with a right quadriceps strain, is scheduled to throw live batting practice later this week in Sarasota. … Left-handed starter Cade Povich, who’s on the 15-day injured list with left elbow inflammation, will begin throwing bullpen sessions this week. … Triple-A Norfolk placed first baseman/outfielder Jhonkensy Noel on the 7-day injured list with left wrist inflammation.
