Orioles designate Enns for assignment, recall Raquet, put Gibson on taxi squad; O’s-Rays lineups

BALTIMORE—Left-hander Dietrich Enns, who was the winning pitcher in both of the Orioles’ wild comeback victories on Sunday and Monday, was designated for assignment on Tuesday.

The 35-year-old Enns is 3-0 with a 3.94 ERA in 13 games. Enn has struck out 13 and walked 11 in 16 1/3 innings and did not allow a home run. He missed nearly a month with an infection in his left foot.

“It’s tough. It’s the worst part of the job,” manager Craig Albernaz said of cutting Enns. “It’s tough for anyone to deliver that news. With D, he’s been great for us. He’ll be fine. He’s a great pitcher, but it’s tough to have those conversations. He took it like a pro. We’ll see what the future holds for him, but we had to get a fresh arm up here.”

Left-hander Nick Rauqet was recalled for the third time from Triple-A Norfolk. He’s allowed three runs on three hits in 2 2/3 innings.

His stay with the Orioles could be a short one. Trey Gibson was put on the taxi squad for Tuesday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays, and the Orioles haven’t announced a starter for Wednesday.

Mayo better but not in lineup

Coby Mayo, who hasn’t played the last three games due to lower back discomfort, said he’s better but isn’t in the lineup for Tuesday’s game.

“Getting what I need in the training room, weight room, getting out there working today and feeling good,” Mayo said. “Should be available tonight.”

Mayo was scratched just before Sunday’s first game.

“Didn’t feel right, kind of tightened up on me, some inflammation in there, but feeling pretty good now,” he said. “This happened before, so I knew it would be a few days. A three-men bench with me being out the last two days hasn’t been ideal especially with an extra-inning game last night.”

Albernaz said Mayo has been responding well.

“A really good day yesterday of treatment,” he said. “He got some work in and he’s feeling much better.”

Entering Tuesday’s game, the Orioles are two games out in the wild-card race, but Minnesota, Seattle, Toronto and Texas are ahead of them. Albernaz isn’t looking at the standings.

“No way, it’s not even June yet,” Albernaz said. “There’s a lot of games left. That’s why for us it’s not at that point yet. There’s always a point where you have to, right? When it gets further down into crunch time … Each win is hard, and we value … each win. That’s why we try to win every single game we play … If you worry about them now, you’re going to drive yourself nuts.”
