BALTIMORE—Third baseman Jordan Westburg visited orthopedic surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles on Monday for an evaluation on his partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.
Westburg, who hasn’t played this season, had a platelet-rich plasma injection in his right elbow in February and has been training in Sarasota since.
Last week, Westburg reported discomfort in his right elbow after increasing the length and intensity of his throws. He rested for several days, then went for his examination.
“They’re going through the options, the next steps, what he wants to do,” manager Craig Albernaz said before Wednesday’s game against the Yankees. “He’s speaking with [ElAttrache], his agent and his support, trying to figure out what his next steps are.”
Albernaz hasn’t had a chance to see Westburg play but knows how much he wants to play.
“It sucks. I feel for him,” Albernaz said. “I feel for all of our guys that get hurt. You see the work that they put in, every day in the season, spring training, the offseason work they put in.”
Initially, Westburg was slowed by a strained oblique muscle until the elbow injury was discovered.
Last season, Westburg was limited to 85 games after two stints on the injured list for a left hamstring strain and sprained right ankle. In 2024, he missed nearly two months after he fractured his right hand when he was hit by a pitch.
“It’s a lot, especially for him,” Albernaz said. “He’s hanging in there, the best he can, but it weighs on him. You want to be out there. You want to be out there competing, being with the boys, playing the game he loves.”
Beavers goes to injured list
Outfielder Dylan Beavers has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a strained right oblique muscle. The move is retroactive to Monday. Beavers was scratched from Tuesday’s lineup when he felt discomfort while taking swings before the game. He’s hitting .243 with two home runs and 12 RBIs.
Beavers is the 13th Oriole on the injured list. Catcher Maverick Handley was recalled from Double-A Chesapeake. Handley had been with the Orioles as a taxi squad catcher.
Note: The Orioles will start Shane Baz, Chris Bassitt and Brandon Young in the three-game series against Washington at Nationals Park beginning Friday night.
