Spring Training

Orioles option Cade Povich to minor league camp

SARASOTA—The Orioles optioned left-handed pitcher Cade Povich to minor league camp. Povich, who had a 4.32 ERA in three spring starts, had a difficult path to make the team because of the additions of Chris Bassitt and Shane Baz to the starting rotation.

The 25-year-old allowed three runs on one hit and five walks with four strikeouts on Friday against the Philadelphia Phillies at Clearwater.

Povich, who was 3-8 with a 5.21 ERA in 22 games last season, will join an impressive rotation at Triple-A Norfolk that’s expected to include Brandon Young, who started 12 times for the Orioles last season, as well as Nestor German, Trey Gibson, Levi Wells and Cameron Weston.

German, Gibson and Wells remain on the spring training roster, which has 51 players, including 15 non-roster invites.

Two of those 51, relievers Felix Bautista and Colin Selby, are on the 60-day injured list. Infielders Jackson Holliday and Jordan Westburg and reliever Andrew Kittredge are expected to begin the season on the injured list.
