Rogers named Orioles’ Opening Day starter

CLEARWATER, Florida—A year ago, Trevor Rogers began the season on the injured list, didn’t start a game for the Orioles until May 24th and wasn’t put in the starting rotation until June 18th.

After that, Rogers pitched so well that he’s earned the Opening Day start, manager Craig Albernaz said before Friday’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Orioles will face the Minnesota Twins in the March 26th opener. It will be Rogers’ first Opening Day start.

In 18 starts last season, Rogers compiled a 9-3 record and a 1.81 ERA. He received one fifth-place vote for the Cy Young Award.

The 28-year-old left-hander has allowed two hits in five scoreless innings in two Grapefruit League games, striking out six without a walk. He also allowed six runs on six hits in a 2 1/3 inning start against Team Netherlands on March 3rd.

Rogers is scheduled to start on Saturday against the Pittsburgh Pirates in Bradenton, Florida.

It’s been a great story for Rogers, who was acquired from Miami in July 2024 and was sent to Triple-A Norfolk after four starts and a 7.11 ERA. His knee injury prevented him from starting the season on the active list.
