Question: Have you noticed any players who have visibly transformed physically since last year, weight loss/gain, bulked up/down? From: Rick Staley
Answer: Rick, the most notable change is that starting pitcher Kyle Bradish reported that he gained 10 pounds during his rehab from Tommy John surgery and feels stronger as a result.
Samuel Basallo said prior to spring training that he lost about 15 pounds this offseason.
Question: I just read the interview with Chris Bassitt, and he said a salary cap doesn’t fix anything. I was wondering what your thoughts are on this? From: Ryan Parr, Annapolis
Answer: Ryan, I wouldn’t favor a salary cap. While the spending of the Los Angeles Dodgers is seemingly out of control, I think there are measures that can be negotiated aside from a salary cap to limit their spending, particularly the absurd amount of deferred money.
TV ratings for the last two World Series involving the Dodgers have been higher than in recent years. I think having a “villain” team is good for a sport.
The Orioles, Cleveland, Tampa Bay and Milwaukee have shown that smart management can compete for playoff spots, and a salary cap doesn’t guarantee parity. Look at the NFL. The Kansas City Chiefs and New England Patriots have been in the last 15 AFC championship games—in a sport with a salary cap.
I’m sure this is an issue that will come up again and again in the coming years as the Collective Bargaining Agreement is negotiated. Changes will be made to the salary structure, but there won’t be a salary cap.
