Needing catching depth, the Orioles signed Sam Huff, who’s played parts of five major league seasons, to a minor league contract on Thursday.
Huff, who turned 28 on Wednesday, has played 98 games for Texas and San Francisco from 2020-2025.
Last season, Huff hit .208 with two homers and four RBIs in 20 games and threw out seven of 24 (29.2 percent) of runners trying to steal.
The Orioles have just two catchers, Samuel Basallo and Adley Rutschman, on the 40-man roster. Last season, due to multiple overlapping injuries, they used seven catchers — Basallo, Rutschman, Gary Sánchez, Maverick Handley, Alex Jackson, Jacob Stallings and Chadwick Tromp.
Besides, Basallo and Rutschman, only Handley, who hit .073 (3-for-41) remains in the organization. He and Huff are expected to receive invitations for major league spring training.
