Does Alonso’s signing with Orioles make Henderson, Westburg extensions more possible? | MAILBAG

Question: I was wondering if the Alonso signing in addition to filling the need of a right-handed power bat also signaled to the Boras Corporation that the Orioles would like some serious consideration when it comes to extending Gunnar Henderson and Jordan Westburg, arguably the two most important players represented by Boras that play for the Orioles? From: Edward Cuneo

Answer: Ed, I don’t think one signing affects any possible extensions. Henderson, Westburg and Jackson Holliday are all represented by Scott Boras, and he will certainly listen and consider any offer made on behalf of his clients, but he won’t take any offer more or less seriously just because the team signed Pete Alonso.

It appears that both Mike Elias and David Rubenstein have a good rapport with Boras, and that’s always a positive.

Question: Since it’s a well known fact locally that Frank Robinson was instrumental in the success of the team during his time here, why don’t the Orioles ever really promote his legacy? They never hold Frank Robinson Bobblehead night or Frank Robinson replica jersey giveaway night. Outside of the statue dedication back in 2012, he’s never mentioned. Is it due to the prickly personality he had? Was there a falling out with the team at some point?  Was it because the team didn’t draft and develop him? From: Bruce Voelker

Answer: Bruce, you bring up an interesting point. I met Frank Robinson several times over the years, but I can’t say I knew him. As a result, I can’t describe his personality.

David Rubenstein spoke at length about Robinson and his value to the 1966 Orioles at Pete Alonso’s signing, so there’s certainly no ill will there.

The Orioles held a memorial service in April 2019 with Brooks Robinson, Jim Palmer, Cal Ripken Jr. and Eddie Murray speaking about him. It was attended by both John and Louis Angelos, so it’s obvious that previous ownership recognized his contributions.

Perhaps you have the feeling that Frank Robinson is overlooked just because he played with the team during the same time Brooks Robinson did, and Brooks was beloved by everyone, including Frank.

Most weekdays, I’ll be answering at least one Orioles question. If you’d like to submit a question, send it to: Rich@BaltimoreBaseball.com. Questions may be edited for clarity, length and style.
