Orioles’ coaching turnover continues with Asche, Sanders heading to Tigers

The Orioles’ coaching staff exodus continues as hitting coach Cody Asche and first base coach Anthony Sanders are heading to the Detroit Tigers.

The report by The Athletic was confirmed by an industry source.

Asche was the Orioles’ hitting coach in 2025 after two seasons as the club’s offensive strategy coach. He’ll be the Tigers’ assistant hitting coach.

Sanders, who was given permission to seek other jobs last week and had been the longest-tenured coach with the Orioles, will be Detroit’s first base coach. He had been with the Orioles since 2020.

Asche’s departure means the Orioles will have an entirely new hitting staff next season. Assistant hitting coach Tommy Joseph has departed and another assistant hitting coach, Sherman Johnson, is joining the Chicago White Sox.

Bench coach Robinson Chirinos also has been given permission to look for jobs with other organizations.

During manager Craig Albernaz’s introductory press conference on Tuesday, Orioles President of Baseball Operations Mike Elias was asked about the coaching staff.

“In the background, there’s a lot of activity and work going on on that front,” Elias said. “Different conversations happening with different returning coaches or coaches that are still in the organization. Not really the time or place to get into all that but suffice to say there will be alterations to the composition of the staff. That’s normal year-to-year, but also when you have a manager change.”

The futures of pitching coach Drew French, assistant pitching coach Ryan Klimek, bullpen coach Mitch Plassmeyer, third base coach Buck Britton, development coach Grant Anders and senior advisor John Mabry have yet to be determined.
