Orioles reinstate Wells, Mateo from 60-day injured list

SAN DIEGO—The Orioles reinstated right-hander Tyler Wells, who will start Tuesday night’s game against the Padres, and infielder/outfielder Jorge Mateo from the 60-day injured list.

Wells hasn’t pitched since April 12th, 2024 and had reconstructive right elbow surgery in June 2024.

Mateo, who last played on June 6th, was most recently on the injured list with a right hamstring injury. He’s hitting .180 with a home run and three RBIs in 31 games. Mateo has stolen 14 bases in 15 attempts.

Catcher Maverick Handley, who was added to the roster for Monday’s game, was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk.

Right-handers Corbin Martin and Elvin Rodriguez were designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man for Mateo and Wells.

Martin was 1-0 with a 6.00 ERA in 17 games with two saves for the Orioles while Rodriguez, who was at Norfolk, allowed two runs on three hits in an inning in his only game with the Orioles.

Right-hander Roansy Contreras, who pitched 4 1/3 scoreless innings last Wednesday against Boston, was claimed off waivers by Colorado.

Minor league updates: First baseman/outfielder Ryan Noda, who’s on the Orioles’ 40-man roster, has been placed on Triple-A Norfolk’s 7-day injured list with a bruised right hand.

Besides adding outfielder Enrique Bradfield Jr, outfielder Reed Trimble is joining Norfolk from Double-A Chesapeake.

Chesapeake placed right-hander Michael Forret on the injured list with a strained left hamstring.

The Baysox activated infielder Aron Estrada from the injured list and received right-hander Zane Barnhart, infielder Griff O’Ferrall and outfielder Thomas Sosa from High-A Aberdeen. Right-hander Ryan Long was activated from the temporary inactive list

The IronBirds received infielder Jose Perez from Chesapeake.

Single-A Delmarva placed right-hander Keeler Morfe on the injured list with a blister on the fourth finger of his right hand.

Aberdeen and Delmarva end their seasons on Sunday. Chesapeake’s ends on September 14th while Norfolk plays until September 21st.
