Orioles get ready to face old friends O’Hearn, Laureano in San Diego

SAN FRANCISCO—It’s been just over a month since the trade deadline, and as the Orioles get ready to play the San Diego Padres on Monday, they’ll see two prominent players who were dealt on July 31st, Ryan O’Hearn and Ramón Laureano.

The Orioles have already seen relievers Bryan Baker, who was dealt to Tampa Bay on July 10th; Seranthony Domínguez, sent to Toronto on July 29th; and Andrew Kittredge, who went to the Chicago Cubs on July 31st as well as infielder Ramón Urías, who went to Houston on July 31st.

The Orioles faced Baker on July 20th in Tampa. Domínguez was traded in between games of a split doubleheader, and pitched against the Orioles in the second game on the 29th.

Kittredge pitched for the Cubs against the Orioles on August 3rd. Urías broke up Brandon Young’s bid for a perfect game with an infield single in the eighth on August 17th in Houston.

The Orioles won’t be seeing Charlie Morton, Cedric Mullins or reliever Gregory Soto. Morton was traded to Detroit on July 31st. Mullins and Soto went to the New York Mets in separate deals. The Orioles had already played the Tigers and Mets by the time of the trades.

Laureano signed a one-year, $4 million contract with a $6.5 million option for 2026 while O’Hearn, the starting designated hitter for the American League in the All-Star Game, will be a free agent this fall.

“A guy that came to the Orioles and rejuvenated his career,” interim manager Tony Mansolino said of O’Hearn. “A lot of coaches are tied to him because of that. We loved the man. He helped this team get in the playoffs a couple of years and was a leader in the clubhouse. Just a guy is so well-liked …

“Laureano, the same kind of deal … He’s a little different, a little quirky … Guys gravitated towards him. Obviously, he put up All-Star caliber numbers for the short time when we had him.”

With the Orioles, Laureano hit .290 with an .884 OPS with 15 home runs and 46 RBIs. In 28 games with the Padres, Laureano has hit .305 with a .935 OPS, seven home runs and 23 RIBS.

O’Hearn hit .283 with an .837 OPS, 13 home runs and 43 RBIs with the Orioles. He’s hit three homers, driven in 11 runs and hit .259 with a .751 OPS in 26 games with San Diego.

Besides Laureano and O’Hearn, the Orioles will again be facing future Hall of Famer Manny Machado, who played from 2012-2018 in Baltimore. Machado has played each of the Padres’ 137 game this season and is hitting .286 with an .814 OPS, 21 home runs and 79 RBIs.
