CHICAGO—The Orioles have a third left-hander in their bullpen with the addition of Dietrich Enns, who was acquired from Detroit in exchange for cash considerations on Thursday.
At 34, Enns is the second-oldest Oriole behind Saturday’s starter, 35-year-old Tomoyuki Sugano, but has appeared in only 18 major league games for Minnesota in 2017, Tampa Bay in 2021 and Detroit this season.
Enns was 1-1 with a 5.60 ERA in seven games, two starts, for the Tigers this season.
“I was excited, happy to join the team,” Enns said. “Really looking forward to joining this group and helping in any way that I can.”
Enns joins Keegan Akin and Grant Wolfram as left-handers in the bullpen.
He grew up in Frankfort, Illinois, about 30 miles away from Wrigley Field, and lives in suburban Philadelphia.
The Orioles’ bullpen is in a state of flux, so there is opportunity in the final 50 games.
“I think they’re huge,” Enns said. “Any time you can be in the big leagues and showcase what you’ve got and improve and do the best you can is a huge thing for moving forward in your career and showcasing what you have.”
Notes: Tyler O’Neill, who had been in the original lineup as the designated hitter, was scratched with an illness. Gunnar Henderson will be the DH. Luis Vázquez will play shortstop. …First baseman Ryan Mountcastle is scheduled to join the Orioles for their three game series in Philadelphia, starting Monday. He’s been at Triple-A Norfolk on a rehab assignment for his strained right hamstring. … Albert Suárez, who like Mountcastle, is on the 60-day injured list with a rotator cuff injury, threw to hitters and will do it again before going on a rehab assignment. … Brandon Young will start Sunday against the Cubs, and Cade Povich, who’s been on the 15-day injured list with left hip inflammation, will start against the Phillies on Monday.
