Orioles’ injured list grows again as Colin Selby suffers hamstring injury

BALTIMORE—A day after two Orioles, catcher Adley Rutschman and left-handed reliever Keegan Akin, returned from the injured list, right-hander Colin Selby was placed on the 15-day injured list with a strained left hamstring.

Selby injured the hamstring on his final pitch in the seventh inning of Monday night’s 11-4 win over the Toronto Blue Jays. He’s the 27th Oriole to be placed on the injured list; 13 are currently on it.

“He’ll get an MRI this morning. We don’t know the severity of it,” interim manager Tony Mansolino said before Tuesday’s split doubleheader with the Blue Jays. “We’ll know more after the MRI.”

In nine games, Selby is 0-2 with a 4.09 ERA.

The Orioles recalled right-hander Yaramil Hiraldo from Triple-A Norfolk. He’d been sent to Norfolk when Akin was activated.

Scary moment: Right-hander Kade Strowd hit Toronto’s George Springer on the helmet with a 96-mph pitch in the ninth inning Monday night. Springer lay face down several minutes until he walked off the field with help of Toronto’s trainers. He’s feeling better but not in the lineup for Game 1.

“That one pitch lost control. It was my first sinker of the game,” Strowd said. “It’s part of the game, but you hate to see somebody like George go down like that. Hope he’s all right.”

Strowd appeared shaken by the incident. Pitching coach Drew French talked with him before Strowd finished the game.

“We had our radar up on that,” Mansolino said. “We had Keegan moving around the bullpen once he started yanking some balls. He didn’t mean to do that. That’s an accident. That’s something that pitchers, a lot of times, that affects them. I checked in with him this morning. He seemed OK. He seemed fine. I told him he’s probably going to pitch today; it’s a doubleheader, be ready to roll.”

Waiting on Rodriguez: There still hasn’t been an update on starting pitcher Grayson Rodriguez’s right elbow. He’s getting multiple opinions.’

“We just have to figure out what’s what, what’s causing things,” Mansolino said. “Be as thorough as you can be, check with [world]-renowned doctors, use our doctors that are great.”

Waiting on Mountcastle: First baseman Ryan Mountcastle is eligible to come off the 60-day injured list on Wednesday, but he won’t. Mountcastle is at Norfolk rehabbing his strained right hamstring, and Mansolino expects him to return next week in Philadelphia, but that could change.

Notes: Right-hander Brandon Young has been added as the 27th man for the doubleheader. Mansolino said he’ll either start or pitch bulk innings. … Left-hander Cade Povich will start for Norfolk tonight. He remains on the 15-day injured list with left hip inflammation. Kyle Bradish will start for Double-A Chesapeake on Tuesday. Tyler Wells will start Wednesday for the Baysox.
