Sánchez goes to injured list with sprained right knee; Orioles acquire catcher Alex Jackson from Yankees

The Orioles on Sunday placed catcher Gary Sánchez on the 10-day injured list with a sprained right knee injury and acquired catcher Alex Jackson from the New York Yankees in exchange for international bonus pool space and a player to be named later or cash considerations. Jackson’s contract was selected from Triple-A Norfolk.

Sánchez was injured in a collision at home plate with Atlanta’s Matt Olson in the fourth inning of Saturday’s game in Atlanta. Sánchez tagged out Olson with his left arm but then was spun around, landing on his right knee.

The Orioles have already used five catchers this season, and four — Maverick Handley, Adley Rutschman, Chadwick Tromp and now Sánchez are on the injured list. the Orioles needed another catcher to pair with Jacob Stallings, who joined the team on Tuesday after Tromp went on the injured list. He had a two-run double in the 10th inning of Saturday’s 9-6 win over the Braves.

Jackson, 29, was the sixth overall pick in the 2014 draft by San Diego, and he’s hit .132 in 124 major league games with Atlanta, Miami, Milwaukee and Tampa Bay in five seasons. This season, Jackson is hitting .226 with 10 home runs and 34 RBIs for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in the Yankees’ organization.

To make room for Jackson on the 40-man roster, the Orioles transferred Jorge Mateo from the 10-day to 60-day injured list. Mateo has left hamstring inflammation.

Note: The Orioles will start Brandon Young, Tomoyuki Sugano and Charlie Morton in the series against the New York Mets that begins on Tuesday at Camden Yards. The Mets will start Clay Holmes, David Peterson on Tuesday and Wednesday. They’ve yet to announce a Thursday starter.
