Orioles thwarted by deGrom again in 10-2 loss to Rangers

What happened? Brandon Young allowed three runs on six hits in four innings as the Orioles lost to the Texas Rangers, 10-2, at Globe Life Field on Tuesday night.

Young (0-2) was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk to take the place of Zach Eflin on the active roster when Eflin went to the 15-day injured list with a lower back strain. However, Young was forced to start in place of Charlie Morton, whose elbow tendinitis meant he’d be starting on Friday in Atlanta instead.

The Orioles (37-48) lost for the second time in six days to Jacob deGrom (9-2).

deGrom, who no-hit the Orioles for six innings on June 30th before allowing a hit in the seventh, gave up two runs on five hits in six innings.

“The last time we saw him, he’s really good, and we saw him as good as we’ve ever seen him,” interim manager Tony Mansolino told reporters in Arlington, Texas. “You see him twice in one week, and you’re going to be a little bit better. I thought we hit some balls hard. We drew some walks. We weren’t able to cash in a couple of guys on base.”

Catcher Gary Sánchez hit a two-run home run, his fifth, in the fourth inning.

Adolis Garcia drove in four runs. He singled for two runs in the third, and Jonah Heim singled for a third run in the third.

Alejando Osuna hit a two-run home run against Matt Bowman in the fifth to give Texas a 5-2 lead. Garcia added a two-run single in the sixth, and the Rangers extended their lead to 7-2.

“He’s a good player, man. We saw him in the playoffs a couple of years ago in ’23. He torched us,” Mansolino said.

Bowman allowed four runs on six hits in 1 2/3 innings.

Gregory Soto gave up three runs in the eighth, an inning in which he walked two, hit a batter and threw three wild pitches. Texas’ Justin Foscue broke an 0-for-44 streak with a double.

Infielder Luis Vázquez threw one pitch and retired Ezequiel Duran on a lineout to left.

Jacob Latz, who no-hit the Orioles for six innings last week, relieved deGrom and threw three scoreless innings, allowing two hits for his first save.

Jorge Mateo will be out 8 to 12 weeks with a strained left hamstring. He was pulled from a rehab assignment at Triple-A Norfolk. Mateo had been in Norfolk rehabbing a left elbow injury he sustained in a collision.

Jacob Stallings, whose contract was purchased from Norfolk before the game, hit for Sánchez in the ninth, and struck out. Stallings replaced catcher Chadwick Tromp on the roster. Tromp is on the injured list with a lower back strain.

Sánchez injured a finger in the eighth, but Mansolino didn’t appear to be concerned about it.

How did Young look? After four major league starts, Young has a 7.02 ERA.

“I think every one, I’ve been building off of,” he told reporters in Arlington. “Just trying to eliminate the big innings, the crooked numbers every outing … It’s tough, every time you go out there, you try to learn something, try to get better. Definitely something to learn from.”

Young is trying to eliminate big innings.

“You don’t think about the ones you get out,” he said. “You think about the ones you didn’t get out of, honestly. It’s tough. I’m trying to get my feet under me in the big leagues. It’s not as easy as people make it seem.”

What does it mean? The Orioles had won two straight and hope for a rebound from starter Tomoyuki Sugano on Wednesday.

What’s the stat of the day? The Orioles have 13 players on the injured list, including three catchers — Tromp, Adley Rutschman and Maverick Handley.

What’s the word? “I’ve been giving up two or three in every outing, it’s been hurting the team.”-Young on allowing big innings.

What’s going on in the minor leagues? Tyler O’Neill went 2-for-3 in his injury rehab start for Norfolk in a 5-4 loss to Durham. Dylan Beavers hit a three-run home run, his third.

Leftfielder Thomas Sosa homered in High-A Aberdeen’s 6-2 win over Greensboro in a game shortened by rain to six innings. Shortstop Joshua  Liranzo hit a grand slam.

Jacob Cravey threw six scoreless innings, allowing three hits, in Single-A Delmarva’s 6-3 win over Fredericksburg.

Double-A Chesapeake and Richmond were suspended by rain in the third inning with the Baysox leading 1-0 on a Reed Trimble home run. The game will resume on Wednesday.

What’s next? Tomoyuki Sugano (6-4, 4.06) will face Nathan Eovaldi (4-3, 1.87) on Wednesday at 8:05 p.m.
