Orioles infielder/outfielder Jorge Mateo will miss eight to 12 weeks because of a left hamstring strain, interim manager Tony Mansolino told reporters in Arlington, Texas on Tuesday.
Mateo, who was rehabbing a left elbow injury at Triple-A Norfolk, was removed from the Tides’ game on Sunday, and he’ll be out for an extended period.
First baseman Ryan Mountcastle, who’s on the 60-day injured list with a right hamstring strain, was projected to miss the same amount of time as Mateo, but Mansolino said last week that Mountcastle could return not long after his July 30th eligible date. Mountcastle concurred with Mansolino’s prediction.
Mateo had injured the elbow playing center field in a collision with rightfielder Heston Kjerstad. He had Tommy John surgery last August after a July collision with shortstop Gunnar Henderson while playing second base.
Mateo is hitting .180 with a home run and three RBIs in 31 games. He’s stolen 14 bases in 15 attempts.
Note: Outfielder Tyler O’Neill is moving his rehab assignment to Triple-A Norfolk. He’s playing right field for the Tides.
