Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle left Friday’s game with right hamstring discomfort after he stole home in the sixth inning. The Orioles have Coby Mayo on standby for Saturday’s game. According to an industry source, Mayo, who was at Triple-A Norfolk, was heading to Baltimore but didn’t know if he would be active.
News of the possible Mayo move was first reported by MASNSports.com.
The Orioles could put him on the taxi squad for one day and wait to see if Mountcastle needs to go on the injured list.
This would be Mayo’s fourth stint with the Orioles. He was 1-for-12 (.083) in four games this season. Mayo is 5-for-59 (.094) with 28 strikeouts in his major league career.
The Orioles’ No. 2 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline, is hitting .226 with eight home runs and 28 RBIs in 45 games for Norfolk with a .770 OPS.
