Orioles designate Blewett for assignment after activating Brandon Young

BALTIMORE—Brandon Young is making his major league debut on Saturday. He was recalled from High-A Aberdeen, where he’s spent this week while Triple-A Norfolk is in Omaha.

Right-handed pitcher Scott Blewett was designated for assignment to make room for Young. In two appearances, Blewett allowed an unearned run on five hits in 4 1/3 innings. He struck out six and walked one.

Blewett was claimed off waivers from Minnesota on Monday. He came in handy on Friday night when he pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief of Cade  Povich, helping save manager Brandon Hyde’s bullpen.

“We had to make a move, and unfortunately that was the move we made,” Hyde said. “He really pitched well for us. He did a great job in the role he was in. If we don’t have him in the last few days, we’re throwing a lot of guys we don’t want to throw in that situation. He did an amazing job of throwing strikes. I like his three pitches. He had a really good split to lefties, slider was good. He pitched off those two pitches and snuck a heater in there. He competed well. I enjoyed having him.”

The Orioles are hoping Blewett goes unclaimed in the waiver process because he would be able to go to Norfolk.

Note: Kyle Gibson will start on Sunday for Aberdeen against Brooklyn. The 37-year-old right-hander, who’s expected to join the Orioles’ starting rotation soon, was supposed to start for Norfolk, but there’s a poor weather forecast in Omaha.
