Orioles’ Rodriguez has right elbow inflammation

SARASOTA—Orioles starter Grayson Rodriguez has right elbow inflammation, manager Brandon Hyde said. Rodriguez, who threw 33 pitches and 1 1/3 innings against Minnesota in Fort Myers on Wednesday, received a cortisone shot that Hyde said was successful.

“We are shutting him down for a week-to-10 days, and then start a throwing progression from there,” Hyde said.

“Timeline after a week, I’m not really sure at this point, see how it goes, but it’s just bringing him a week to not throw and let the cortisone do what it does.”

Rodriguez had two stints on the injured list last year, for shoulder inflammation in May, and missed the last two months of the season with a lat/teres strain.

“We’re hoping he responds well to it, and he’s able to start throwing again in a week, two weeks.”

Rodriguez has not been available to reporters since he reported he felt “sluggish” after Wednesday’s starts. Hyde said he’s in good spirits.

“Disappointed, obviously. His goal was to make 30-plus starts this week, and that’s going to be challenging at this point,” Hyde said. “He wants to pitch, so you feel driven. To have this time off, we need to get him healthy. That’s the bottom line. He’s really important to us, and hopefully he comes back as soon as possible.”
