Burnes allows career-high 8 runs as Orioles lose to Red Sox, 12-10

BALTIMORE—On the night the Orioles gave away Corbin Burnes bobbleheads, the ace of the team’s staff allowed a career-high eight runs on 10 hits, also a career high, in four innings.

Craig Kimbrel allowed two runs in the seventh inning, and even though the Orioles had 17 hits, they lost, 12-10, to the Boston Red Sox before 34,541 at Camden Yards on Friday night.

The Orioles (72-51) trail the New York Yankees by one game in the American League East. The Yankees beat Detroit, 3-0.

Just before gametime, the Orioles announced that catcher Adley Rutschman had been scratched because of lower back discomfort. He was replaced by James McCann.

Ramón Urías had a career high five RBIs. Jackson Holliday had four hits, the second youngest Oriole, behind Brooks Robinson to do so.

Burnes (12-5) allowed two runs in the first on RBI doubles by Wilyer Abreu and Rafael Devers. In the third, Devers hit his 26^th home run, which scored Trinton Casas, who was reinstated from the 60-day injured list before the game. Casas had been out with torn cartilage in his left rib cage.

Boston manager Alex Cora employed Brennan Bernardino as an opener, and after he and Zack Kelly got through a scoreless first, though they allowed two baserunners, Cooper Criswell (2-0) began the second.

Urías’ second inning single scored Holliday.

The Orioles tied it at 4 in the third inning when Criswell allowed five consecutive baserunners with two outs.

Eloy Jiménez’s RBI double scored Ryan Mountcastle. Holliday’s triple scored Jiménez, and Criswell’s wild pitch enabled Holliday to score.

Boston scored four against Burnes in the top of the fourth on an RBI single by Connor Wong and a three-run home run by Masataka Yoshida.

The Orioles cut the lead to 8-6 in the fifth on Ramón Urías’ bases-loaded single and a sacrifice fly by McCann.

Criswell allowed six runs on nine hits and four walks in 3 1/3 innings.

Kimbrel allowed a two-run home run to David Hamilton and a solo sot to Jarren Duran in the seventh to put the Orioles behind, 11-6.

Urías hit a two-run home run in the seventh and Colton Cowser scored on a fielder’s choice by Gunnar Henderson, cutting Boston’s lead to 11-9.

Yoshida’s RBI single against Burch Smith in the eighth made it 12-9.

Urías’ eighth-inning sacrifice fly made it 12-10.

Kenley Jansen pitched a spotless ninth for his 23^rd save, the 443^rd of his career.
