Orioles option Coby Mayo to Norfolk, recall Soto

A day after getting his first major league hit, Coby Mayo is heading back to Triple-A Norfolk. The 22-year-old third baseman, who was hitless in his first 16 at-bats with 10 strikeouts before singling in the fifth inning on Wednesday night, was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk on Thursday.

Mayo, who made his debut on August 2^nd, was 1-for-17 (.059) with three walks in seven games.

The Orioles recalled infielder Lívan Soto from Norfolk, who spent a day with the Orioles after Jordan Westburg was placed on the 10-day injured list and was returned to the Tides after Mayo was recalled.

Boston is starting at least three right-handers in the series that begins Thursday night, and it wasn’t likely that Mayo, the 10^th overall prospect in MLB Pipeline, would start any of those games.

Mayo was hitting .301 with 20 home runs and 61 RBIs and a .962 OPS in 77 games with Norfolk before he was added to the Orioles’ roster.

Soto is a left-handed hitter. He was obtained by the Orioles along with outfielder Austin Slater on July 30^th from Cincinnati. Soto was hitless in three at-bats with the Reds.

The Orioles claimed Soto twice off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels this season. He was originally claimed on February 8^th, lost on February 18^th, claimed on April 11^th, and lost to Cincinnati on April 19^th.

Soto, who plays second, third and shortstop, is hitting .355 with a home run and three RBIs in nine games for Norfolk.
