ST. PETERSBURG, Florida—The Orioles signed another longtime major league veteran to a minor league contract. On Friday, they signed two-time All-Star infielder Jean Segura.
The 34-year-old Segura has played shortstop, second base and third base in a 12-year major league career that began with one game with the Los Angeles Angels in 2012.
Segura has played with Milwaukee, Arizona, Seattle, Philadelphia and Miami, but didn’t sign with a team this season.
He was an All-Star with the Brewers in 2013 and the Mariners in 2018. In 2016, Segura led the National League with 203 hits, and is a lifetime .281 hitter with a .729 OPS.
In 2023, Segura hit .219 with the Marlins with three home runs and 21 RBIs and was traded to Cleveland on August 1st and released by the Guardians that day.
On Wednesday, the Orioles signed veteran third baseman J.D. Davis and last month signed second baseman Niko Goodrum, both to minor league contracts. They also signed veteran first baseman Garrett Cooper, who, along with Davis and Goodrum, are at Triple-A Norfolk.
Injuries to second baseman Jorge Mateo and third baseman Jordan Westburg as well as the trade of second baseman Connor Norby to Miami has left the Orioles thin in Triple-A infield depth. They also have veterans Nick Maton, Liván Soto and Terrin Vavra at Norfolk.
Note: The Orioles game with the Houston Astros on August 25th has been moved from to a 7:10 p.m. start to accommodate ESPN’s “Sunday Night Baseball.” Originally, the game was supposed to start at 1:35 p.m.
