Orioles right-hander Corbin Burnes will start for the American League in Tuesday night’s All-Star game at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. The 29-year-old is 9-4 with a 2.43 earned-run average in 19 games,
Burnes has thrown 15 quality starts (three earned runs or less in six innings) and has pitched at least five innings in each of his starts.
It’s the fourth All-Star Game for Burnes, but his first start. Burnes, who was obtained from Milwaukee on February 1st , pitched two innings for the National League in 2021 at Colorado, allowing two runs on four hits, and was charged with the loss.
Burnes was selected to the NL All-Star team in 2022 and 2023 but didn’t pitch.
He’s the first Oriole pitcher to start an All-Star Game since Steve Stone in 1980. Jim Palmer started four times (1970, 1972, 1977, 1978), Jerry Walker started in 1959 and Milt Pappas in 1965.
Burnes will be opposed by Pittsburgh rookie right-hander Paul Skenes. The Orioles faced Skenes in spring training when he pitched the first inning of a Grapefruit League game at Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota on February 29th.
He also faced a team of Oriole prospects in the Spring Breakout game on March 14th.
Gunnar Henderson will bat second and play shortstop on Tuesday night, and Adley Rutschman will catch and bat eighth in the American League lineup.
