For the fourth year in succession, Corbin Burnes is an All-Star. From 2021-2023, Burnes was a National League All-Star with the Milwaukee Brewers. This year, his first with the Orioles, he’s an American League All-Star.
Burnes joins catcher Adley Rutschman and shortstop Gunnar Henderson, who were voted All-Star starters. No other Orioles joined Burnes in Sunday’s selections.
In 18 starts, the 29-year-right-hander is 9-3 with a 2.32 earned-run average. Fourteen of his 18 have been quality starts (three or fewer runs in six or more innings), including 12 of his last 13.
Burnes has not pitched fewer than five innings in any start. He’s allowed just 7.2 hits and one home run per nine innings while striking out 8.4 batters and walking two per nine.
He was obtained from Milwaukee on February 1st in exchange for left-hander DL Hall, infielder Joey Ortiz and a competitive-balance draft choice.
Burnes was the losing pitcher in the 2021 All-Star Game at Colorado, the only one he’s pitched, when he allowed two runs on four hits in two innings.
He’s the first Oriole selected as a starting pitcher since John Means in 2019.
Besides Henderson and Rutschman, four Orioles — first baseman Ryan Mountcastle, third baseman Jordan Westburg, outfielder Anthony Santander and designated hitter Ryan O’Hearn — were finalists, but not selected.
Last year, four Orioles, Rutschman, relievers Félix Bautista and Yennier Cano and outfielder Austin Hays were selected for the All-Star Game.
It’s possible that additional Orioles could be added to the AL team if there are withdrawals because of injury. The game will be played on July 16th at Globe Life Park in Arlington, Texas.
