Orioles’ Means has 2nd Tommy John surgery

Orioles left-handed starter John Means had Tommy John surgery for the second time in just over two years. Both of Means’ surgeries were performed by Dr. Keith Meister in Arlington, Texas.

The Orioles say the surgery was successful.

After his April 2022 surgery, Means returned to the Orioles last September, started four times but elbow soreness prevented him from pitching in last October’s Division Series against Texas. The Orioles delayed the start of his 2024 season to give the elbow more time to heal.

Means, 31, started four games this season and was 2-0 with a 2.61 earned-run average. He left his May 22nd start in St. Louis after three innings and was placed on the 15-day injured list the next day.

Last Friday, executive vice president/general manager Mike Elias reported that Means and right-hander Tyler Wells would have season-ending elbow surgery. Wells had Tommy John surgery when he was in the Minnesota Twins’ organization in May 2019.
