Midday Mailbag: Is Orioles’ offense struggling more this season?

Every weekday, I’ll be answering at least one Orioles question. If you’d like to submit a question, send it to: Rich@BaltimoreBaseball.com. Questions may be edited for clarity, length and style.

Question: It seems to me that the  Orioles’ offense is largely feast or famine this year with more of the latter than fans would like. The number of games in which the O’s score 3 runs or less seems higher to me than at this time last year. Am I imagining this or are the O’s struggling more in terms of games in which they score only a few runs? From: Glenn Fuller, Laurel, Md.

Answer: Glenn, the Orioles have scored three runs or fewer in 16 of their first 48 games, and they’ve won only four of 16. Last year, they scored three or fewer in 14 of their first 48 games, but won seven. So, you are correct.

Question: With MLB embracing Google statcast and 3-D technology, could these devices be used to determine home run calls, especially those hit over the foul pole? From: @markers104

Answer: Mark, it’s possible. I see where the NFL is using tech to measure for first downs during preseason games and if it works, they’ll use it for regular-season games, too.

You rarely see home run calls reversed just because they’re hard to judge, and if technology can make the calls more accurate, I think MLB will embrace it.
