Midday Mailbag: Why no memorial patch for Peter Angelos?

FREE ARTICLE

Each weekday, I’ll be answering at least one Orioles question, sometimes more. If you’d like to submit a question, send it to: Rich@BaltimoreBaseball.com. Questions may be edited for clarity, length and style.

Question: The Orioles have had various memorial patches on their uniforms over the years. Majority owner Edward Bennett Williams in 1988, minority owner Tom Clancy in 2014, and a host of others over the years. Peter Angelos owned the team for over 30 years, yet his memory had no patch on the team’s uniform on Opening Day. What’s going on with this? From: Lauren Taylor, Bel Air, Maryland

Answer: Lauren, a similar question was asked by Jim Considine. It was the family’s wish that no memorial patch be worn.

Question: When no attempt to retain Adam Frazier was made, I thought, okay, a roster spot for one of the glut of promising infield prospects but instead we have Tony Kemp, a step down. Is this move making sense to you? From: Tom Paccione, Ashburn, Virginia

Answer: Tom, similar questions were asked by John Breymaier and Dan Klein. I was a little surprised by the move, too. I had thought the Orioles would keep Jackson Holliday, whom we’ll discuss in Friday’s mailbag. Then, I thought Tyler Nevin would be kept. Rosters are always changing, and I think there will be many roster moves in the coming weeks.

The Orioles wanted a left-handed hitting second baseman, and Kemp is that, and unlike Frazier, he’s OK with limited playing time. Frazier said in an interview this week that he wasn’t content to be a part-time player.
