Orioles will have new pitching coach in 2024; Holt will focus on role as director of pitching; Holmes leaving

The Orioles will have a new pitching coach for 2024. Chris Holt, who has been the pitching coach for the past three seasons, will concentrate on developing pitching in the organization while remaining in his role as the team’s director of pitching.

Darren Holmes, who has served as the team’s assistant pitching coach for the past three seasons and as the Orioles’ bullpen coach for the 2020 season, won’t be returning.

News of the coaching changes was first reported by MASNSports.com and confirmed by an industry source.

The rest of manager Brandon Hyde’s coaching staff is expected to return, including pitching strategy coach Ryan Klimek, who has been with the team since 2017.

Two coaches — Tim Cossins, the major league field coordinator/catching instructor, and major league coach José Hernández — have been with the team since Hyde arrived for the 2019 season.

Bench coach Fredi González and first base coach Anthony Sanders will begin their fifth season. Third base coach Tony Mansolino will start his fourth season.

Co-batting coaches Ryan Fuller and Matt Borgschulte will be in their third seasons. Offensive strategy coach Cody Asche will start his second season.

There’s no word on who Holt’s successor will be, but it’s possible that Justin Ramsey, who’s been Triple-A Norfolk’s pitching coach for the last two seasons and has worked with many of the Orioles’ young pitchers, could be a candidate.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Washington Nationals announced the hiring of Brad Ciolek, formerly the Orioles’ director of draft operations as their senior director of amateur scouting.

Executive vice president/general manager Mike Elias will have to replace Ciolek and, along with Hyde, decide on pitching coaches for next season.
