KANSAS CITY—The Orioles placed infielder Ramón Urías on the 10-day injured list Saturday because of a strained left oblique muscle. Urías suffered the injury during batting practice before Friday night’s game against the Kansas City Royals. The move was retroactive to Friday.
In a counter move, the Orioles purchased the contract of infielder Richie Martin from Triple-A Norfolk. The team had an open spot on the 40-man roster.
“We’ll see how I’m feeling in the next couple of days,” Urías said. “It’s not like a major thing. I just need a couple of days.”
Manager Brandon Hyde said he hoped that Urías would be back when he’s eligible.
“Hopefully, it’s a mild oblique strain and we get him back in about a week-and-a half,” Hyde said.
Martin, who was the overall top choice in the Rule 5 draft by the Orioles in 2018, was hitting .295 with a home run and 14 RBIs in 41 games for Norfolk. He had an .823 OPS and stole 17 bases in 19 attempts.
He’ll be playing second base and hit ninth on Saturday.
“There’s a lot of athleticism,” Hyde said. “He was swinging the bat well in Triple-A. We’re happy about that. He’s a guy that can play in the middle of the field.”
