Family reunion coming for Nevin family; Voth ready to pitch for Orioles; Report: Louis Angelos sues brother, mother

KANSAS CITY—On July 8^th, the Orioles are scheduled to open a series against the Los Angeles Angels at Camden Yards. That series could feature a rarity, a son playing against a team managed by his father.

On Tuesday, the Angels fired Joe Maddon and replaced him with Phil Nevin, who will manage the team for the rest of the season. Phil is the father of Orioles infielder Tyler Nevin.

“When he called me to tell me he was going to be a big league manager, even if it was an interim, it was a lot like when I called him to say I was a big leaguer,” Tyler Nevin said Thursday.

“He’s worked really hard for this, played a long time. That’s why he’s still in the game. He wants a shot to manage the team. He wants to win a World Series, and this is a first step in doing this. I’m really proud of him.”

The Angels fired Maddon after a 12-game losing streak. They’ve lost their first two games under Nevin, who is the first overall top pick to manage in the major leagues; he was chosen first overall in the 1992 draft by Houston

Nevin was not with the Orioles last year when they played the New York Yankees, for whom his dad coached. Nor was he with them in April when they played the Angels in Anaheim. He hopes to play against him next month.

“We had these conversations,” Nevin said. “It’s kind of funny because I talk to him about my at-bats a lot, tell him what I feel like is giving me fits. Now, it’s, ‘I guess he’s going to use that against me.’

“It’s not a secret. All those kinds of scouting reports, the game’s so in-depth with that kind of stuff. He’s not going to know anything anybody else doesn’t. It’s kind of funny, having those conversations, and now he’s going to pick those pitchers that face me.”

Ready to pitch: Austin Voth, who was claimed off waivers from the Washington Nationals on Tuesday, closed up his apartment in Arlington, Virginia, and drove an hour north to Baltimore. He’ll look for a new apartment when the Orioles return from their road trip to Kansas City and Toronto.

“It was a close drive,” Voth said. “That was nice. Excited for another opportunity.”

Voth, who was 9-8 with a 5.70 ERA in five seasons with the Nationals, had a 10.13 earned-run average this year before he was put on waivers.

“I’m just trying to get back where I was the beginning of last year, and build on that,” Voth said. “I know I can compete at this level, and I just need to get back to where I was before.”

Voth, who’s likely to be used in long relief, doesn’t have much familiarity with the Orioles, though he has pitched against them in the past. He didn’t play with any of the Orioles and said he shares an agent with Adley Rutschman and Tyler Wells.

Report: Louis Angelos sues his brother John: Louis Angelos sued his brother, John, the Chairman and CEO of the Orioles, and his mother, Georgia, according to a report in the Baltimore Banner, .

Louis Angelos claims that his father, Peter Angelos, who has been in declining health for several years, intended for his sons to share the team equally, but that John has seized control.

“John intends to maintain absolute control over the Orioles — to manage, to sell, or if he chooses, to move to Tennessee [where he has a home and where his wife’s career is headquartered] — without having to answer to anyone.”

According to the report, the suit says that Georgia Angelos has sought to sell the team, but John has vetoed that idea.
