Santander injures left ankle, leaves game

Orioles rightfielder Anthony Santander had to be helped from the field after injuring his left ankle in the first inning against the Miami Marlins Tuesday night.

Santander rolled his ankle trying to get back to first base on a pickoff attempt by Marlins starter Nick Neidert. Santander fell to the ground and later had to supported by manager Brandon Hyde and athletic trainer Brian Ebel.

Austin Hays, who rejoined the club after coming off the injured list before the game, replaced Santander in right field. He made an outstanding leaping catch at the wall in the bottom of the inning.

The Orioles said Santander sprained the ankle and his status is uncertain.

If Santander goes on the injured list, the Orioles could bring back outfielder Ryan McKenna, who was optioned to the alternate training site at Bowie to make room for Hays earlier in the day.

  • And there’s your prime example of why they need outfield depth because Hays/Santander/Stewart all get hurt consistently.

  • Harvey just looks like he forgets how to pitch when he gets to the 5th inning, also not much defensive help, I thought Galvis should’ve made the play on the last hit in the 5th, so did McDonald...at least he got through the inning...go O’s...

  • Thanks Rich, hope the ankle isn't serious but Hays' arrival was fortuitous. Nice to see the Birds pull off another one!

  • Nice catch by Hays against the wall. His arm strength is immediately noticeable too.

    Mullins has a great knowledge of the strike zone. Seems to be able to take those close pitches for balls.

    DJ Stewart looks to be a great low ball hitter. I hope he can stay healthy while Santander is on IL.

    Cisco looked pretty good behind the plate defensively. He got hit in the face mask by Chisholm’s bat on a strikeout and no histrionics

  • First Hays going back to second base now Santander going back to first base bad luck on basic everyday plays. The Marlins weren’t coming close to most of Valdez slow balls. Amazing hope the league doesn’t catch up to them
    Eventually he’s looking like a all star candidate what a story
